โš–๏ธ Comparative Adjectives: Bigger, More Beautiful, Better

Learn how to compare two things using short and long words. You will be able to say which thing is bigger, better, or more exciting.

Short Words

When a word is short, like 'big' or 'tall', we add '-er' to the end to compare two things. For example, a house is big, but a hotel is bigger. We usually use the word 'than' after the comparative adjective to connect the two things we are comparing.

My car is faster than your car.My car has more speed than yours.
Today is colder than yesterday. The temperature is lower today.

Long Words

When a word is long, like 'beautiful' or 'expensive', we do not add '-er'. That sounds strange! Instead, we put the word 'more' before the adjective. For example, we say 'more expensive' or 'more interesting'. This makes it very easy to compare big words.

This book is more interesting than that one. This book is better to read.
Your city is more modern than my town.Your city has newer buildings.

Irregular Words

Some common words do not follow the rules. They change completely! The word 'good' becomes 'better', and the word 'bad' becomes 'worse'. You just need to memorize these special words because you will use them all the time.

Pizza is better than salad.I like pizza more than salad.
My English is better now.I speak English better than before.
