๐ŸŽ Plural Nouns: One and Many

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about more than one thing. We will look at regular and irregular plural nouns.

Regular Plurals: Add -s

Most English words are regular. When you have two or more of something, you just add an 's' to the end of the word. For example, one cat becomes two cats. This is the easiest way to make a word plural, and you will use it every day when you speak and write in English.

I have one cat and two dogs.one cat, plus two dogs
Please buy three apples at the store.more than one apple
My books are on the table.more than one book

Words Ending in -ch, -sh, -s, -x

Some words end with special sounds like ch, sh, s, or x. You cannot just add an 's' to these words. Instead, you must add '-es' to the end so it is easy to say. For example, one box becomes two boxes, and one bus becomes two buses.

I wash the dishes every evening.more than one dish
There are two buses on the street.more than one bus
She has three boxes of shoes.more than one box

Irregular Plurals

Some common English words do not follow the rules. They change their spelling completely when they become plural! For example, one child becomes two children, and one man becomes two men. You need to memorize these special words because people use them all the time.

The children are playing in the park.more than one child
I see two men near the door.more than one man
My feet are cold today.both of my feet
