โ๏ธ Writing Clear Formal and Informal Emails
Learn how to write great emails to friends and to people at work. You will practice using the right words for every situation.
When to Use Formal and Informal
In English, we change how we write depending on who is reading. Informal emails are for friends and family. You can use short sentences and friendly greetings. Formal emails are for bosses, teachers, or companies. You must be polite and use complete sentences. Choosing the right style shows respect and helps the reader understand you quickly.
Greetings and Openings
The start of your email sets the tone. For a formal email, use 'Dear' followed by the person's title and last name. If you do not know their name, use 'Dear Sir or Madam'. For an informal email, you can just say 'Hi' or 'Hello' with their first name. Always state the reason you are writing right after the greeting.
Sign-offs and Closings
How you end your email is just as important as how you start it. Formal emails need a professional closing like 'Sincerely' or 'Best regards', followed by your full name. Informal emails can end with relaxed phrases like 'Best', 'Cheers', or 'Talk soon', followed by just your first name.
