What is an Irregular Verb?

Normally, we add -ed to make the past simple, like play to played. But some verbs change completely! These are irregular verbs. You must learn their special past forms because we use them every day in English. They do not follow the normal rules.

Go, Have, and Do

Three of the most important irregular verbs are go, have, and do. The past form of go is went. The past form of have is had. The past form of do is did. We use these verbs in almost every conversation about our daily lives.

Say, Get, and Make

Other very common verbs are say, get, and make. Their past forms are said, got, and made. You will hear native speakers use these verbs constantly when telling stories or talking about what happened earlier today.

They made a cake for the party. They created a sweet food in the past.

See, Come, and Take

Finally, let us look at see, come, and take. The past forms are saw, came, and took. Remember that these words do not end in -ed. You need to memorize each new form because they are very different from the present tense.
