โณ Talking About the Past: Was and Were

Learn how to use 'was' and 'were' to talk about the past. You will be able to describe where you were and how you felt yesterday.

What is 'was'?

'Was' is the past form of 'am' and 'is'. We use 'was' with singular words like I, he, she, and it. Use 'was' when you talk about one person, one place, or one thing in the past. For example, you can talk about where you were yesterday or how you felt last week.

I was at home yesterday. At my house on the day before today
She was happy with her gift.Feeling good about her present
The weather was cold this morning.Low temperature earlier today

What is 'were'?

'Were' is the past form of 'are'. We use 'were' with plural words like we, you, and they. Use 'were' when you talk about two or more people, places, or things in the past. Remember to always use 'were' with the word 'you', even when you talk to only one person.

We were at the park last night. At the outdoor public space yesterday evening
You were late for the meeting.Arrived after the correct time
They were very tired after work.Needing rest following their jobs

Making Negatives

To make a negative sentence, just add 'not' after 'was' or 'were'. We often use short forms to speak faster and more naturally in everyday conversation. Say 'wasn't' instead of 'was not', and say 'weren't' instead of 'were not'.

I wasn't hungry at lunch.Did not want to eat food
They weren't ready for the test.Did not prepare for the exam
