โ“ Making Questions and No

Learn how to make questions and negative sentences with do and does. You can talk about daily habits and routines.

How to make negatives with do not and does not

When you want to say no in the present simple, use do not or does not before the action word. Use do not (don't) with I, you, we, and they. Use does not (doesn't) with he, she, and it. Remember that the main action word stays simple, with no extra 's' at the end.

I don't drink coffee in the morning.Saying no about yourself
She doesn't work on Sundays.Saying no about a third person
We don't live in a big city.Saying no about a group

How to ask questions with do

To ask a question about habits, put Do at the very beginning. Use Do with I, you, we, and they. Then add the subject and the action word. Keep the answer short and simple with yes or no.

Do you speak English?Asking another person
Do they like pizza?Asking about a group
Do we have time?Asking about a shared plan

How to ask questions with does

Use Does when you ask questions about he, she, or it. Put Does at the start of the sentence. Just like with negatives, the main action word does not need an 's' because the word does already shows it is he, she, or it.

Does he play football?Asking about a male person
Does she like cats?Asking about a female person
Does it rain a lot here?Asking about the weather
