๐Ÿ  There is and There Are

Learn how to talk about things in a room or a place. Use these words to show that something is there.

What is 'There is'?

We use 'there is' for one thing. This is the singular form. We often use 'a' or 'an' after it. For example, you can talk about one apple on the table or one cat in the garden. It is very easy and very useful for daily life.

There is a book on the table. One book is on the table.
There is an apple in the bag.One apple is in the bag.

What is 'There are'?

We use 'there are' for two or more things. This is the plural form. We add an 's' to the end of the noun. For example, we talk about two cats, three books, or many friends. Use this when you see more than one item.

There are three books on the table.More than one book is on the table.
There are two cats in the garden.More than one cat is outside.

Making Questions

To ask if something is there, we change the order of the words. We put 'Is there' or 'Are there' at the start of the sentence. Then we can answer with 'Yes, there is' or 'No, there are not'. This helps you ask for information.

Is there a pen?Asking about one pen.
Are there any chairs?Asking about more than one chair.
