โ“ Asking Questions: What, Where, When, Who, Why, How

Learn how to use question words to ask for important information in English. Practice making simple questions for everyday conversations.

What, Where, and When

We use 'what' to ask about things. We use 'where' to ask about places. We use 'when' to ask about time or days. Put these question words at the very beginning of your sentence before the verb to get the information you need.

What is your name?Asking for a thing or fact.
Where do you live?Asking about a place.
When is your birthday?Asking about time.

Who, Why, and How

We use 'who' to ask about a person. We use 'why' to ask for a reason, and we usually answer with 'because'. We use 'how' to ask about the way something is done or about feelings and health.

Who is that man?Asking about a person.
Why are you happy?Asking for a reason.
How are you today?Asking about health or feelings.

Making the Question

Remember the correct order for your question. Start with the question word, then add the helper verb like 'do', 'does', or 'is', followed by the subject and the main action. This helps people understand you clearly.

Where do you work?Question word plus do and subject.
How do you make this?Asking about the way to do something.
