๐Ÿ”ฎ Talking About the Future with 'Will'

Learn how to use 'will' to make quick decisions, promises, and predictions. You will be able to talk about things that haven't happened yet easily.

Instant Decisions

We use 'will' when we make a choice right now, at the moment of speaking. For example, when someone asks a question and you decide your answer immediately. We often use the short form 'll after pronouns like I, you, she, and they. It helps you sound natural and friendly when speaking to friends or family.

I'm hungry. I will make a sandwich.I just decided to make food right now.
The phone is ringing. I'll get it!I am deciding to answer the phone at this exact moment.
It's cold in here. I'll close the window.I am making a quick choice to warm up the room.

Promises

We use 'will' to tell someone that we will definitely do something in the future. This is very common when you want to show you are helpful, honest, or reliable. You can promise to help a friend, call someone later, or keep a secret. The negative form is 'will not' or 'won't'.

I will help you with your homework tomorrow.I promise to be there to assist you.
Don't worry, I won't tell anyone your secret.I promise to keep this information safe.
I will call you when I arrive home.I promise to telephone you later.

Predictions

We use 'will' to say what we think, guess, or believe will happen in the future. We often start these sentences with 'I think' or 'I hope'. These are usually guesses based on our opinions or feelings, not on hard facts we can see right now.

I think it will rain this afternoon. This is my guess about the weather.
People will live on Mars in the future. This is my prediction for many years from now.
She will love this birthday present!I believe she will be very happy with it.
